Gary StevensGary Stevens was born, March of 1963 in Idaho. He rode his first thoroughbred winner, in his first start, at the age of 16 at Les Bois Park in his native Idaho. Soon he became the top jockey in Washington, winning riding title at Longacres in 1983-84. He moved his tack to Southern California where after a rocky and homesick start, his career skyrocketed. Gary thinks the Kentucky Derby is the "Greatest race" And why not. He has won it 3 times in 1988 aboard Winning Colors, Thunder Gulch in 1995, and Silver Charm in 1997. Gary retired in 1999 with debilitating knee pain. Following retirement, he became an assistant trainer for the Thoroughbred Corp. Gary soon had to give in to the desire to ride again. He resumed riding on Oct. 4, 2000. Gary Stevens was soon back on the Triple Crown trail, just a few months later with Derby favorite Point Given. . Point Given was to win the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. But Gary Stevens and Point Given were to taste defeat in the Kentucky Derby. Braking from the outside, leaving the gate Gary said "go" to the son of Thunder Gulch and with the large crowd and the noise "The Big Train" never came back to hand and the fast pace proved to much for Point Given. Gary said Point Given deserved the Triple Crown that year and that Kentucky Derby is perhaps the loss he regrets the most. Point Given was to later go on to win the Travers at Saratoga . With his million-dollar smile Gary Stevens stared in the movie Seabiscuit as jockey George Wolf. Proving to be a very powerful presence on screen and in any jockey colony, Gary now entertains his fans in more ways then one. Inducted into racing's Hall of fame in 1997 Gary has accomplished just about everything in the world of racing. Maybe one of the best credits a jockey can receive is to be honored with the George Wolf memorial awarded. This is voted on annually and is awarded to the rider that brings credit and honor to his profession. Gary won it in 1998.
